The Ghosts of Ember Mansion

A OnceWas Fantasy Adventure for Characters Level 9–11 Compatible with the OnceWas Core Rule Book — easily adapted to any fantasy RPG system

Every house keeps its secrets close. Some keep them closer than others.

For two hundred and sixty-five years, the Ember Mansion has replayed the same midnight murder — over, and over, and over again. Torn free of the material plane and adrift in the Astral Sea, the mansion is not merely haunted. It is alive, and it is waiting for the right kind of guests.

Your party has been sent to retrieve the Aetherblade, a soul-cleaving sword of terrible power, needed to stand against Ixalor the Whisper King before he breaks free of his chains. But first they must find Nyssaroth the Gossiper, a cosmic broker of forbidden truths, and pay his price: a secret each of them has been hiding from themselves.

Only then can they cross the Celestial Stairway and step through the mansion's door — into a house built from grief, betrayal, and a curse that doesn't want vengeance.

It wants company.

What's Inside

    •    A complete gothic horror adventure, running 15–18 hours across 5–6 sessions, built around exploration, psychological tension, and hard moral choices rather than dungeon-crawl combat.

    •    A modular mansion. After the opening chapters, the Doll House, the Tavern, the Library, the Gallery, and the Gardens can be run in any order — tailor the adventure to your table's pace and taste.

    •    A cursed family with real depth. Every member of the Ember family is trapped, transformed, and suffering — not simply monstrous. Liam, Isolde, Seraphine, and the rest each carry their own temptations, confessions, and reasons the players might come to pity them.

    •    A social, non-combat climax. There is no boss fight waiting at the heart of the house — only a man who has died nearly a hundred thousand times, and a party who must convince him to finally let go.

    •    A self-contained pocket-adventure (The Colossus of Yensov) hidden inside an enchanted book in the Library, ready to run as a mini-dungeon within the dungeon.

    •    A full bestiary, magic item appendix (including the fabled Aetherblade and the treacherous Ember Deck of Many Things), a GM tracking sheet for a rotating "stolen item" mechanic, and a complete family tree and NPC dossier in Appendix E.

    •    Gorgeous full-color illustrations and battle maps throughout, ready for use at the table or on your VTT of choice.

Picks up after: B2 — The Quest for Halfhag's Soultrap
